     Fraud in the Online Age, John D. Thomas, May 8, 2015

 

Title of the Reflection:

     Work Authentication

 

First Impression:

     After reading the title, my first assumption is that the article will talk about the dubious activities like fake e-mails asking for money, fake websites that sell fake products, etc…

     “Is it unethical for you to help your child with their homework? Yes, of course, it’s ethical to help them. It’s not ethical — it’s not actually helpful — for you to complete your children’s homework. The letter writer has enlisted a sort of surrogate parent to help them complete their homework, and I’m not comfortable with it. I don’t think that behavior is ethical or representational of the skills of the applicant.” – Jack Shafer

 

Reflection Proper:

     A person’s work is a representation of who that person is. Based on his or her work, someone will have an insight on the level of competency a person has achieved, what his or her personality is, or how he or she thinks. The same is true with the examples given in the article, which were about the following: first, competency level of the applicant based on the resume that he or she passes. Second, the level of mastery of a student based on the topic he or she was taught at school based on his or her grades on his or her homework. Finally, the amount of mastery the student achieved based on the grade he or she got from his or her subject. 

     Using the first example, which is about the resume, an employer will have an insight on the competency level of the applicant based on how good he or she wrote his or her resume. If a person gets his or her grammar and spelling correct, the employer will assume that this applicant has a good background on his or her education; however, if an employer sees that the applicant has a lot of errors on his or her grammar and spelling, they will have doubts on whether or not they will employ this applicant. Thus, if an aspiring applicant asks someone else to do his or her resume, then that person is committing an unethical act or maybe a criminal one if the act is done in certain states or countries. The reason behind this would be the fact that he or she is committing a fraudulent act or to deceive another person to gain an advantage. Connecting act of fraud towards the example given above, we will see that the applicant is the doer of the action while the employer is the receiver of the said act and the advantage that the applicant wants to get would be the impression that the applicant has a good educational background based on the quality of work he or she exerted on making the resume. The same idea can also be applied to the other examples stated above. 

     Looking into the difference between helping someone do something and doing something for someone, one must look into the end result of one’s actions. If, for example, we see a beggar on the street, would you give him or her food or would you teach him or her how to make food, like farming or fishing for example? Before you answer that question, one must think not just for today but for the future days as well. If you choose the inner over the latter, the beggar’s stomach will be full for today; however, for the future days, he or she will get hungry again and he or she will result to the only thing he or she might now would give him or her food, which is to beg. Thus, the cycle will continue over and over again for the rest of time. If you choose the latter over the inner, he or she might or might not get any food for today, which is bad as well depending on how severe the situation is, but on the long run, he or she will have a stable food source for the rest of his life; thus, the cycle is broken and he or she will not depend on others for the chance of getting food. 

     To end my paper, I would like to reiterate the need for us to distinguish between helping others by showing the ropes and helping others by doing or giving the end result and we must not look only at the present but at the future as well. 

 

5 Things I’ve learned:

  1. There are online services that cater to the needs of a person to create their online portfolio or resume for them. This is done in order to fool the employer into thinking that the person they will employ is highly capable, based on the quality of work he or she showed on his or her resume.
  2. There are online websites in which they will do your own work for a fee. 
  3. There are online websites that will attend the online classes for you and you’ll get an A at the end. This completely eliminates the purpose of enrolling to a subject or enrolling to a school.
  4. There are some states in the United States that make it illegal to sell one’s services in order to make other people’s written assignment. 
  5. There is a distinction between helping someone with their work and doing the work itself, especially when it comes to the ethicality of one’s actions. 

 

5 Integrative Questions:

  1. Which act will help the said person in the long run? Helping him or her learn the ropes of doing something and eventually letting them do the work for themselves or doing the work for that specific person?
  2. If you’re looking for a job and you created a pre-made resume by someone other than yourself, which creates an impression towards the employer, will it be an advantage for you or will it bury you on a deeper hole?
  3. If our country has the said laws that New York has, how are we going to crack down on the said fraudulent activities other than tracking and shutting down their website?
  4. Is there a way for online schools to know on whether or not the person under the said username is the person who actually enrolled to the said class or school?
  5. Do we need to implement a technology in which certifies that a person’s work is actually his work and not another person’s work?
